Full course description

This blended learning experience offers educators the opportunity to examine essential math content through contextualized exploration and collaboration with colleagues. Throughout the Math Academy, teachers are invited to be the student first, to be curious about the math themes and instructional tools and strategies introduced in the Institutes, and to lean on the learning community fostered in the Math Academy. Coaches with math and numeracy instruction experience in various settings are there as thought partners and collaborators to guide and support teachers along the way.

This academy comprises two institutes:

Institute 1 (Sept-Oct): Arrays to Area Models to Algebra Tiles

Math Content: Number and operation sense, multiplication concepts, writing algebraic expressions, solving quadratic equations

Institute 2 (Nov-Dec): Number Lines to the Coordinate Plane

Math Content: Number and operation sense, measurement, linear equations

Each Institute follows the same structure:

  • Pre-work:Through readings, video, and student work, this 1.5-hour self-paced course will orient you to the math content of the upcoming sessions and specific mathematical knowledge for teaching.
  • The in-person session: You’ll spend the day (6 hours in-person, lunch provided) with SABES facilitators and the other folks in your cohort experiencing activities as learners and engaging in discussion with colleagues. You’ll leave with valuable classroom resources.
  • Coaching: You will meet with your SABES coach to explore directions relevant to your practice and to work on your final project for this institute—an instructional plan that you can use in your classes.
  • Community of Practice: With a SABES facilitator, you will meet with a small group from this cohort to continue growing your learning and supporting one another.
  • Synchronous workshop: To conclude the institute, you’ll attend a one-hour online workshop in which you continue your learning about instructional routines, look at student work, and make plans for next steps.

The Math Academy Institutes blend self-paced, in-person, and virtual facilitated sessions, along with individual and cohort coaching time according to the following schedule:
