This three-hour mini-course provides a solid introduction to evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI) in ABE. Learn about the four essential components of reading (alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) and how they interrelate, the role of diagnostic assessment, and the basic tenets of explicit instruction. 

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Define evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI)
  • Describe the four essential components of reading, including how they are interrelated
  • Identify general instructional priorities for beginning adult readers (0–3 GLE), intermediate adult readers (4–8 GLE), and adult secondary readers (9+ GLE)
  • Describe the five features of evidence-based reading instruction in ABE
  • Identify next steps in providing evidence-based reading instruction for learners at a specific instructional level of your choice

While not eligible for PDPs by itself, this offering can be bundled with other EBRI offerings to earn PDPs.
