Full course description

2 PD hours

In our digital age, adults are expected to listen to, respond to and create audio and video content as well as participate and collaborate in online meetings and conversations. This session provides a variety of edtech routines that expand the context of speaking and listening instruction by integrating authentic digital workplace, community, and academic tasks into ESOL lessons.

Participants use a focused listening task to learn about digital literacy, then explore and work with three ways to focus the integration of digital literacy and ESOL instruction: content, process, and product.  All webshop tasks employ easily accessible, mobile-friendly, and free, digital platforms and presentation tools that instructors can use to support ESOL learners’ listening and speaking skill development.

This session will equip ESOL teachers with edtech routines and tools to support learners in applying and expanding their listening and speaking strategies for the digital world. As learners engage with these strategies, they not only strengthen their language skills but also become adept at listening for, discussing, and creating online content.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the intersection of ESOL speaking and listening instruction and digital literacy
  • Make use of ed tech tools and instructional routines to transfer speaking and listening strategies to digital tasks
  • Support learners’ creation of digital products that demonstrate their proof of learning during speaking/listening tasks
