Full course description
2 PD Hours
Civic literacy provides adult English learners with a fundamental understanding of what they need to participate effectively in the U.S. democracy and what their rights and obligations are as citizens and residents. This foundation is critical to learners’ civic efficacy and engagement.
In this session, you will be provided with ten effective strategies—aligned with the civics standards in the MA ELPS and the Teaching Skills That Matter (TSTM) curriculum—for introducing civic literacy into the adult ESOL classroom. The session will include concrete examples of the strategies for all language proficiency levels. It will also include some best practices, pertinent handouts with ideas and resources, and ample time for discussion. A later session in early 2024 will focus on the perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors associated with civic efficacy and engagement.
Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:
- Describe the key concepts of civic literacy, civic engagement, and civic efficacy
- Explain how civic literacy and related language development contribute to adult immigrants’ societal participation
- Adopt and adapt the strategies, resources, and tools presented to incorporate civic literacy into your adult ESOL learning environment
