Full course description
6 PD hours
Integrating language and math skills with content instruction in the ABE classroom can be a challenge at any time, but it can be particularly challenging when working with English learners who have transitioned to ABE classes. This multipart workshop will increase ABE teachers’ understanding of the needs of ELs and provide practical strategies and resources to better meet these needs.
The course, brought to you as a collaboration between the ELA and ESOL PD Centers, will help bring awareness to particular language and cultural considerations, develop teacher knowledge of key second language acquisition principles and teaching strategies, and guide teachers in applying these principles and strategies to support the ELs in the ABE classroom more effectively.
While this workshop will focus primarily on how to engage and support non-native English speakers successfully, the strategies are adaptable and provide support for a variety of students.
This workshop is structured in a blended format, with two virtual sessions via Zoom and two self-directed modules in our LMS. The first self-paced session provides foundational information that will prepare participants for the first virtual session. Following the first virtual session, participants will have time to apply strategies and techniques in their classes. The group will then reconvene via a final virtual session, during which they can discuss their experiences and reflections with their colleagues and facilitators.
